3 Interview Tips for Introverts That Can Help Boost Confidence

3 Interview Tips for Introverts That Can Help Boost Confidence3 Interview Tips for Introverts That Can Help Boost ConfidenceJob interviews can be stressful for anyone, but introverts may have additional challenges to address and overcome if they want to stand out and shine in an interview situation. Utilizing a few tips can have introverts feeling more calm and confident.Speaking on behalf of other introverts, its not simply the fear of speaking up thats a challenge, but also the fear of mis-speaking, being misinformed on a topic, and sometimes their own imposter syndrome, explains Nancy Wang, cofounder and CEO of nonprofit Advancing Women in Product andLead Product Manager at Rubrik, Inc.Here are some interview tips for introverts to help maximize their poise, presence, presentation, and peace of mind during any job interviewDo a strengths-based 360.To prepare for your interview, getting to know your strengths can be helpful in greasing the wheels toward higher confidence and a less stressful interview experience for introverts. Becoming familiar with your best professional assets can help you lead from your strengths during the interview, and be remembered for your strengths after it. To that end, Lisa Sansom, founder of LVS Consulting, suggests doing a strengths-based 360 to review your talents and skills.Introverts have many great strengths as a collective demographic, and each introvert will have individual strengths and strengths constellations that make him or her successful, says Sansom. With this in mind, take some time before youre sitting in front of the hiring committee to think through the top assets that you bring to the role, and practice talking about them until you feel comfortable doing so.Own the interview.Wang suggests that introverts use what she terms the OWN system to gain confidence in interviews and other public speaking situationsO Especially if youre in a meeting surrounded by executives and hiring managers, says Wang, being well-prep ared for an interview will do wonders for your confidence to speak up and share your credentials.Dont W Get your main points in early, says Wang. If you wait until the end of the interview to speak up about what youve prepared, you may miss the gelegenheit to do it. Getting your key message points in early will help steer the conversation, which is what the hiring committee will remember about you.Never get into your own head. We are all afraid of saying the wrong thing and looking stupid as a result, explains Wang. To help with this, I recommend approaching your interview contact beforehand, if appropriate, and doing some prepping based on what you learn. If you already have an indication of what may happen during the interview- going back to point number one above- then youll be better prepared.Gain an edge through listening.Introverts can flip the script, moving the spotlight temporarily off of themselves during an interview situation to maximize their inherent listening powers. Mary York, who is a vice president at William Mills Agency and a self-described introvert herself, suggests that introverts can excel during interviews by focusing on their wheelhouse of really hearing others. You can then use that information to inform quietly impressive responses. For introverts who are often perceived as shy and quiet, use your listening skills to your advantage, said York. Be a careful observer and use body language to not just be a listener, but an active listener. Hold eye contact and lean towards individuals during conversations to build rapport and trust. And ask good questions. While interviews may feel harder on some levels if youre an introvert, its important to remember that you have some advantages in these situations, too. By getting to know your strengths, over-preparing your talking points, and using strategic listening to your advantage during your interview, youll be well-positioned to land that job.Know someone looking for a job? How to Talk About Salary Expectations

How to Talk About Salary ExpectationsHow to Talk About Salary ExpectationsWhat happens if a potential employer asks you questions related to your salary expectations during an bewerbungsgesprch? How should you respond? Here are three interview tips to deal with that possibility.1. Expect to be asked about salaryOne of the most important interview tips is to be prepared, and this is something that may come up. Employers will likely have a budget in mind, even before they abflug the hiring process, for the position theyre looking to staff. So you should be prepared to be asked what you are interested in making in the role you are applying for, even in the initial stages of the hiring process. One reason you may be asked about your salary expectations is that the hiring manager will want to know if you and the company have the same general range in mind. If, for example, your salary requirement is $60,000, but the company is willing or able to offer only $45,000, for instance, the employ er will want to know on the front end.Related interview tips? Keep in mind that there may be Employee Perks to Negotiate.2. Have a salary range in mindTry to offer a compensation range, instead of a single figure. This requires doing some salary research.Consult resources such as the latest Robert Half Salary Guide for Accounting and Finance. Plug your zip code and experience for the position youre seeking into the Salary Calculator. Factor in your skills, knowledge and everything you bring to the table. Read the job description to see how well you stack up against the minimum qualifications without taking your salary expectations into account.Pursue jobs in your desired salary range, of course, but be careful that you dont rule out positions because the salaries listed in job ads dont match your expectations. Theres almost always room for negotiation, and some companies may post salaries that are on the lower end of the range theyre willing to pay to allow for some back and forth.V isit the Salary Center, where youll be able to adjust salaries for jobs in your city with the Salary Calculator, and get your own copy of the Salary Guide.3. Hold steady in your negotiation, but be honestIf youre asked about your salary requirements and you dont have a ready answer, make sure you dont undersell yourself. Say something like, Actually, I was wondering what this position pays. Do you have a range in mind? The best advice is to practice your responses before you go to the interview so you wont be caught off guard. Rehearse in front of a mirror or with a friend. If the interviewer continues to push, dont panic. This is where your research comes in handy. Cite a range so you dont lock yourself into a concrete figure. You want to leave some flexibility to negotiate if the employers offer is below your expectations. Even if youre a new graduate, you could use some salary negotiation tips.By focusing on your desired salary, you keep the emphasis where it should be on your nex t job.Find out how you can work with Robert Halfs recruiters to find a position matched to your unique skill set and requirements.VISIT OUR CAREER CENTERThis post has been updated to reflect more current information.

Jobs Analysis of President Obamas State of the Union, 2012

Jobs Analysis of President Obamas State of the Union, 2012Jobs Analysis of President Obamas State of the Union, 2012Jobs Analysis of President Obamas State of the Union, 2012Last night in his Built To Last State of the Union address, President Obama discussed many current and recommended initiatives which have the potential to create mora jobs for Americans and to build on the success ur country has had in generating more than 3 million jobs in the last 22 months. Kathryn Troutman- Author, Educator, Career Consultant, and President/Founder of The Resume Place, Inc.- offers her analysis of the Presidents speech by identifying the specific recommendations and actions by the President that could benefit your job outlook.Troutman views many of the Presidential initiatives as having a positive long-term impact on Americas job outlook and on job seekers through improved educational programs. For current job seekers, Troutman continues to encourage the following activities to support your j ob searchThe initiatives described in the State of the Union may or may not be offering you real jobs today. The job sectors that may be affected are manufacturing, exporting goods, infrastructure-related construction, clean energy, teaching, training, and government. Some of ansicht positions will require additional specialized training, and it is important that you continue to monitor public (and private) initiatives if you plan to position yourself to be marketable in the upcoming years. Keep track of unterstellung initiatives listen to the news, monitor the Presidents weekly radio talks, and follow the legislation to see if these initiatives are moved forward. For instance, if you need re-training, you can listen to see whether the re-employment programs are expanded to include specialized business training programs in community colleges. Or, if you are an entrepreneur or small business owner, you can look for opportunities that may develop to get more financial support from ban ks.Obamas 2012 Jobs Plan1. Bring Manufacturing Back to the U.S. Stop rewarding businesses that? ship jobs overseas, and start rewarding companies that create jobs? right here in America. If youre a business that wants to? outsource jobs, you shouldnt get a tax deduction for doing it.If youre an American manufacturer, you should get a bigger tax?cut. If youre a high-tech manufacturer, we should double the tax? deduction you get for making products here. And if you want to? relocate in a community that was hit hard when a factory left town,? you should get help financing a new plant, equipment, or training for? new workers.2. Increase U.S. ExportsI will create a Trade Enforcement Unit that? will be charged with investigating unfair trade practices in countries ?like China.Make? sure that no foreign company has an advantage over American ?manufacturing when it comes to accessing finance or new markets.3. Improve Training ProgramsCut through the maze of confusing training programs.Turn o ur unemployment system into a reemployment system that ?puts people to work.Join me in a national commitment to train two million? Americans with skills that will lead directly to a job. My ?Administration has already lined up more companies that want to help.?Model partnerships between businesses like Siemens and community ?colleges in places like Charlotte, Orlando, and Louisville are up and? running. Now you need to give more community colleges the resources ?they need to become community career centers places that teach ?people skills that local businesses are looking for right now, from? data management to high-tech manufacturing.4. Improve Education SystemOffer schools a deal. Give them the resources to keep good? teachers on the job, and reward the best ones. In return, grant ?schools flexibility To teach with creativity and passion to stop ?teaching to the test and to replace teachers who just arent helping ?kids learn.5. Make Higher Education AffordableCurrently Americans owe more in tuition debt than ?leistungspunkt card debt.Higher ?education cant be a luxury its an economic imperative that every? family in America should be able to afford.Extend the tuition tax credit we? started that saves middle-class families thousands of dollars.Give more young people the chance to earn their way through college by? doubling the number of work-study jobs in the next five years.States also need to do their part, by making higher education a higher? priority in their budgets.Colleges and universities have to do? their part by working to keep costs down, such as re-design courses to help students finish more quickly and use? better technology.6. Retain Skilled International Students Educated in the U.S.Hundreds of thousands of talented, ?hardworking students in this country arent yet American citizens. As soon as they get ?their degree, we send them home to invent new products and create new ?jobs somewhere else.We should be working on ?comprehensive immigrat ion umgestaltung right now. But if election-year? politics keeps Congress from acting on a comprehensive plan, lets at ?least agree to stop expelling responsible young people who want to? staff our labs, start new businesses, and defend this country.7. Promote EntrepreneurismMost new ?jobs are created in start-ups and small businesses.Tear down regulations that prevent ?aspiring entrepreneurs from getting the financing to grow.Expand tax? relief to small businesses that are raising wages and creating good ?jobs.8. Support Innovation and Basic ResearchSupport the same kind of ?research and innovation that led to the computer chip and the ?Internet to new American jobs and new American industries.Dont gut these investments in our budget.9. Bolster Clean Energy ProgramsNowhere is the promise of innovation greater than in American-made? energy.Im directing my?Administration to open more than 75 percent of our potential offshore ?oil and gas resources. With only 2 percent of the worlds oi l reserves, oil isnt enough. We ?have subsidized oil companies for a century. Thats long enough.? Its time to end the taxpayer giveaways to an industry thats rarely? been more profitable, and double-down on a clean energy industry ?thats never been more promising. Pass clean energy tax credits and? create these jobs.We have a supply of natural gas that can last 100 years.Experts believe this will support more ?than 600,000 jobs by the end of the decade. The development of natural gas will create jobs and power trucks and? factories that are cleaner and cheaper.Because of federal investments, renewable energy use has nearly ?doubled. And thousands of Americans have jobs because of it.Im directing my Administration to allow the development of? clean energy on enough public land to power three million homes.Help manufacturers eliminate energy waste in? their factories and give businesses incentives to upgrade their ?buildings. Their energy bills will be $100 billion lower over the ?next decade, and America will have less pollution, more manufacturing,? and more jobs for construction workers who need them.10. Repair Americas Infrastructure. Theres never been a better time to build, especially since the ?construction industry was one of the hardest-hit when the housing ?bubble burst. In the next few weeks, I will sign an Executive Order clearing away ?the red tape that slows down too many construction projects. But you ?need to fund these projects. Take the money were no longer spending ?at war, use half of it to pay down our debt, and use the rest to do ?some nation-building right here at home.11. Assist Returning VeteransWe are providing new tax? credits to companies that hire vets. Michelle and Jill Biden have? worked with American businesses to secure a pledge of 135,000 jobs for ?veterans and their families.Im proposing a Veterans? Job Corps that will help our communities hire veterans as cops and? firefighters, so that America is as strong as those who defend he r.

How to Get a Writing Job Top 5 Writing Job Boards

How to Get a Writing Job Top 5 Writing Job Boards How to Get a Writing Job Top 5 Writing Job Boards There are three rules you must keep in mind when browsing writing job boards.Do not pay to workDo not write for free (or exposure)Avoid the freelancing farms where the lowest bidder winsYou know the kinds of opportunities I mean. There are so many people who want to work from home, or who want to pursue writing as a career, that an entire industry has sprung up around exploiting behauptung people and pushing them into doing more and more writing in less and less time. This doesnt lead anywhere good. People who find writing jobs through such venues are expected to submit work on extremely short notice. Essentially, theyre on call- without the benefits and protections of being an actual employee. Those who arent willing to work under these circumstances are passed over in favor of those who are. And no matter how talented the writers may be, the content they produce for these sites is of s uch low quality that they arent creating samples they can use to land a real writing job.No matter how much you may want to be a writer, do not participate in this.Ive been writing and editing in various capacities- technical, corporate, freelance, and even as a student journalist back in the day- since 2003. There are many ways to succeed as a writer. Racing for the bottom isnt one of them.Do the math and decide on your hourly take-home rate. Then, the important part Dont budge.Whether youre looking for the occasional gig or full-time work, theres no shortage of good opportunities for people who can write well. Here are the top five job sites for writers1. Freelance Writing JobsPros This site is an amazing service and a huge time-saver. Originally founded by Deb Ng and now helmed by Noemi Tasarra-Twigg, the site continues to be a fantastic resource for freelance writers.Every day, Freelance Writing Jobs scours numerous sites and presents a list of freelancing jobs, sorted into vario us categories (content writing, technical writing, and journalism, to name a few. There are also editing and translating jobs on a regular basis). Some are on-site jobs, and some are work-from-home jobs.A recent sampling of jobs posted on Freelance Writing Jobs.If you want, you can sign up to have new freelance writing jobs emailed to you daily.(Getting your application in early can increase your chances of landing a job. More than 25 percent of jobs are filled by candidates who applied in the first two days a job welches posted, according to StartWire.)More job postings, plus a quick job alerts sign-up.In addition to the job listings, there are extensive resources for freelance writers. Whether youre new to freelance writing or just looking for a refresher, the detailed information on portfolios, the administrative side of freelancing, and other topics is invaluable.FWJ is active on Twitter, too, offering up tips and quotes in addition to jobs.Cons If youre looking for full-time wo rk, youll need to look elsewhere. Also, there are only two to three dozen jobs posted per day. The curated postings save you the trouble of weeding through site after site yourself, but this is a popular site with a loyal following- meaning more competition for these choice jobs.2. ProBlogger Job BoardProsThis jobs board is run by Darren Rowse, who founded the immensely popular blog ProBlogger. For everything there is to know about blogging, ProBlogger has you covered. From WordPress themes to making the fruchtwein of first drafts, and from time-saving apps to in-depth advice on analytics, ProBlogger is hands-down one of the best and most comprehensive resources for bloggers. The ProBlogger Job Board is updated daily- or even multiple times per day. You can subscribe to receive instant notifications about new postings. The ProBlogger Job Board is updated daily with jobs for- you guessed it- bloggers.Rowse is also a dedicated photographer, and runs a separateblog on digital photography . If youre skilled at both writing and photography, youll have much greater earning potential and far more opportunities. Real estate blogging, for example, is just one promising niche for people who are talented writers and photographers. Rowse is also active on Twitter, and definitely worth a follow.Cons Job sites that curate job postings are convenient because you dont have to scour endless listings yourself, but the flip side is that many more people see the job postings than otherwise might- leading to increased competition. (Fortunately, a targeted resume can help you stand out in a sea of applicants. Jobscans resume analysis tool gives you instant, personalized feedback about what you can do to make sure your resume sells you well.)3. DicePros Dice is one of the many job sites focusing primarily on the IT and engineering industries- but writers shouldnt overlook it.Many major companies post job listings here, including Amazon and Deloitte.Dice was founded in 1990, and the web site launched in 1996. Dice features about 80,000 to 90,000 job listings per day. Most of these are not writing jobs, but the writing jobs that are available are fantastic. Jobs in these industries are typically interesting and challenging, and compensated accordingly.Dice is easily one of the best job sites for technical writers. The search function features filters so you can find jobs that suit your needs. You can search by title, by type of employment, by whether telecommuting is an option, and more. You can create a job alert so youll be notified of new relevant postings.Dice regularly publishes detailed reports to help job seekers stay informed. The Dice Media Center features numerous surveys and reports to help job seekers stay up-to-date on topics such as salaries, in-demand skills, and labor market trends.Cons The biggest downside is the limited percentage of relevant jobs for writers. The job search function is promising, but not perfect. Youll have to wade through some irrele vant jobs, because searches for writing jobs generally include jobs for programmers and analysts in the results. The advanced search is a Boolean search, but be careful of eliminating words from your search. The technical and tech-adjacent jobs available on this site could easily include terms youd typically use to try to exclude non-writing jobs from your results.4. MediabistroMediabistro offers an incredible range of jobs for writers, editors, and more.Pros If youre in the market for full-time writing work, this should be one of your top stops. 90 to 95 percent of jobs posted are full-time opportunities, with the remainder made up of part-time and temporary jobs, internships, and freelance roles. Many of the biggest media companies post jobs on Mediabistro, including NBCUniversal, Cond Nast, and Time Inc.Other companies with media-related jobs post openings on Mediabistro, too, including The Humane Society of the United States, BASF Corporation, and Green Flash Brewing Company. (Si de notenzeichen If you enjoy IPAs, youve got to get your hands on some of Green Flash Brewings West Coast IPA. Trust me.) If youre serious about a writing career, you cant beat the jobs posted on Mediabistro. The job alerts option allows you to quickly customize your application materials and send them in when your dream job is posted.Mediabistros Twitter account is also worth following if youre interested in career and job search tips, media news, and the occasional motivational quote or picture.Mediabistro is the place to look for top-quality writing jobs.Cons You can create a profile as a freelancer, displaying your experience and writing samples, but at $21 per month or $145 per year, its not the best investment. So much of freelancing success is based on relationships- youre better off spending your money to attend networking events and get yourself in front of people that way.5. CraigslistPros Yes, really. Craigslist can be a great place to find writing jobs. And if youre looki ng for remote work, youre not limited to the listings in your city only. You can do a search for relevant postings in any city. (That said, if youre browsing listings in other cities and see one that specifies local candidates only, dont apply if you cant work on-site in that city. Youll be wasting both your time and theirs.)There are plenty of great opportunities posted on Craigslist.Cons Craigslist is also swarming with scams, gigs that pay less than peanuts, and chances to write for exposure. If time is your most limited resource, there are better job sites for you than Craigslist. If you tend to be overly optimistic, Craigslist is also not for you. To find the good opportunities, you have to be able to recognize which posts are worth pursuing- and which are not. There are definitely diamonds in the rough- just keep your expectations realistic and a healthy dose of skepticism handy.Ignore Craigslist postings like this one (sorry, Tim). There are countless job sites for writers, bu t these five are the most worthwhile. No matter what kind of opportunity youre seeking, and no matter what your experience level, you can find high-quality writing jobs using these sites.
